“This antique chair has been in my family for generations, but it feels outdated. I want to keep its charm while making it fit with my home’s style.”
My client came to me with a 19th century antique sofa that she had inherited. It had great sentimental value & also value as an antique but it was old, worn & drab. The structure had gone so it was uncomfortable & lumpy. She knew she wanted a velvet cover in red or green. I sourced some samples & there was one she liked immediately: a beautiful cotton velvet in a rich rust tone that suited the wood tones & the age of the sofa.
The whole sofa needed to be rebuilt from the frame up with new springs, new cushions & the wood needed a clean & polish to keep the patina but look fresh. In keeping with the era of the design, I used traditional (& sustainable) materials (horsehair, hessian, feathers).
The finished sofa now fits into her home, with a modern yet classic refresh. It will last another lifetime and looks fantastic next to the piano as well as being comfortable to sit on.
